In this episode of The Feminine Business School, we go deep into one of the most misunderstood foundations of sustainable success: capacity.

Because if you’re resting, slowing down, or “doing the work” but still feeling exhausted, inconsistent, or overwhelmed… the issue isn’t discipline.

It’s not mindset.

It’s not strategy.

It’s capacity.

Capacity is the operating system everything else runs on — your business, your nervous system, your relationships, your creativity and your ability to actually hold the life you’re trying to build.

And most women are trying to expand their lives without ever rebuilding the system that holds them.

In this episode, we explore:

  •  Why rest often isn’t restorative (even when you think it is)
  •  What capacity actually is (biologically + somatically)
  •  Why so many women are stuck in push–collapse cycles
  •  How modern systems are quietly depleting nervous system capacity
  •  The Spoon Theory and how to understand your real daily energy
  •  Why strategy fails when capacity is low
  •  And what it actually takes to rebuild your ability to hold more life, desire, and ambition

I also share a real client example of how everything shifted when we stopped focusing on output — and started rebuilding capacity first.

Because the truth is simple:

You don’t need more effort. You need more capacity to hold your life.

If you’ve been feeling like you’re doing everything “right” but it’s still not working — this episode will land deeply.

Transcript: Capacity Is Everything: Why Rest Isn’t Rebuilding Your Energy (And What Actually Will)

Welcome back to the Feminine Business School.

I hope you’re feeling rested and resourced this week… and speaking of being resourced — we need to talk about capacity.

Because over the last few episodes, we’ve touched on burnout, misaligned strategies, and the impact of generic support on women’s bodies, lives, and businesses.

But today, I want to take this conversation somewhere much more precise.

Because capacity isn’t just something to understand intellectually.

It’s not a concept to analyse.

Capacity is the operating system everything else runs on.

Your life.
Your business.
Your relationships.
Your wellbeing.
Your sense of aliveness.

And if your capacity is unstable… nothing else sticks.

Not strategy.
Not discipline.
Not clarity.
Not even the most powerful modalities.

So today, we stop talking about capacity as an idea…

…and start relating to it as a baseline requirement for everything you’re trying to build.

So let’s get very clear about what capacity actually is – Capacity is your body’s physical ability to metabolise stress hormones. It’s a biological experience. It’s not just mental capacity for mental load or trauma. It’s your nervous system, liver, cells’ ability to physically handle the stress response from an experience — that’s what capacity is.

So, if your capacity is lowered for whatever reason — it could be because of chronic stress, poor sleep, nutrition, grief, — and then you have a stressful situation on top of that, the stress hormones build up beyond what your body can handle. This is when we start to feel overwhelmed, panic, and people say things like, “I shut down,” “I freeze,” “I can’t think,” “I can’t feel,” “I can’t connect.” That’s your BODY doing that. You’re not choosing it. It’s not your personality — you’re not lazy or incapable. You’re actually wired this way.

So your Capacity is actually your nervous system’s ability to:

  • hold input
  • process emotion
  • make decisions
  • recover from stress
  • sustain action without collapse

Most women think capacity is how much they can get through in a day. But capacity is actually how much life your system can hold without going into fragmentation. And when I say fragmentation I’, referring to feeling overwhelmed, feeling numb or you move into procrastination or collapse cycles.

Ok so lets go into more detail and look at what capacity looks like in real, every day life? A good way to assess your capacity is to look at the start and end of your day, what you’re body is signaling to you.

When your capacity is online you wake and you feel a sense of spaciousness in your body and mind. You wake without bracing for the day ahead and you actually feel rested.

And you know your capacity is still online if you finish the day with something left in the tank – not numbing out scrolling on your phone,  not collapsed on the lounge and counting down the hours until you can jump into bed and disappear.

The amount of capacity you have available in your body each day determines so much of how you move through your day, both personally and professionally. For example the amount of capacity you have determines your ability to create – whether it’s coming up with creative ideas, solutions to problems or even creating life. Capacity also enables you to be with intensity – so you can navigate complex emotions like your kid having a tantrum or a difficult professional conversation without collapsing after. Having greater capacity helps with retaining and using information as well as your ability to adapt and navigate continual change. I know myself, that when my capacity is low I can’t really deal with spontaneous activities or zero plans…and also the more capacity you have the more magnetic you are and you can draw abundance to you….and you can hold more.

Because the truth is — your capacity needs to match your desires.

Otherwise… you can want more…

but you can’t hold more.

And this is where one of the biggest gaps exists.

Rebuilding capacity is often completely skipped over.

In health.
In personal development.
In business.

Because rest, in most systems, is still treated as unproductive.

Something you earn.
Something you squeeze in.

Not something foundational.

But real restoration — the kind that actually rebuilds capacity — is not optional.

It’s the thing everything else depends on.

And when we take a step back… this isn’t just personal. It really is a cultural issue.

We are living inside systems that normalise chronic stress.

Gabor Maté speaks about this in his most recent book, The Myth of Normal — and when I first came across the data around women’s health and chronic illness, I remember feeling honestly furious.

Because it made something very clear:

We’re not just dealing with individual burnout.

We are living in environments that make nervous system overload normal, especially forn women. And then expecting us, women, to perform inside that…without ever addressing capacity.

And this is where another problem shows up.

A lot of women think they’re resting…

but they’re not restoring.

They’re pausing.

You take a day off — but your mind is still running.
You go on holiday — but your body is still wired.
You slow down — but you’re still holding everything internally.

So nothing actually resets.

Because rest without regulation doesn’t rebuild capacity.

It just interrupts output.

You’re still stressed…

just more quietly.

I often explain this through something called the Spoon Theory.

Think of your capacity like a limited number of ‘spoons’ in your cutlery drawer—  and each spoon is a unit of energy you have available each day. So some days you may have a full set of spoons, say 12…and other days maybe only 6 spoons because some are in the dishwasher etc..

Now everything in your life costs spoons.

Your work.
Your kids.
Your emotional load.
Your menstrual cycle.
Your health.
Your life.

And the key, which I just mentioned, is that your number of spoons is not fixed. It changes daily….even hourly depending on what you’re dealing with each day.

So instead of asking:
‘Why can’t I keep up?’

The more powerful question is:
‘What am I carrying right now?’

Because your capacity isn’t failing.

It’s responding. It’s responding to how many spoons you have available….

And this is the turning point.

Capacity comes before strategy.

Not after it.
Not alongside it.

Before it.

Because strategy only works when your system can hold it.

Otherwise you don’t get results…

you get cycles.”

A really simple example of this in my own life is strength training.

I knew for years it would support me.

But I didn’t have the capacity.

Not physically.
Not emotionally.

So instead of forcing it…

I met myself where I was.

Walking.
Yoga.
Gentle movement.

And as my capacity grew…

so did what I could hold.

That’s how this work actually looks in real life.

And this is exactly why my work is built the way it is.

Because I don’t start with strategy.

I start with capacity.

Inside The Capacity Code —we map your patterns, your nervous system, your real capacity…

and begin restoring it.

This is your foundation.

Inside REVIVE —we go deeper.

We rewire the patterns that keep you stuck in push, collapse, or disconnection…

so you can actually hold more of your life and your business.

And inside my Alive + Awake 1:1 work — this becomes fully embodied.

We integrate this into how you live, lead, work, and make decisions…

in a way that is precise, sustainable, and deeply personal.

Because transformation doesn’t start with doing more.

It starts with being able to hold more of yourself.

And just to make this really tangible…

I recently worked with a client who, on paper, was doing everything right in her business.

She had the strategy.
She was showing up.
She knew what to do.

But she kept cycling between short bursts of momentum… and then complete collapse.

And what became really clear, really quickly… was that this wasn’t a strategy problem.

It was a capacity problem.

Her nervous system was already holding so much — life, pressure, emotional load — that every time she tried to build momentum, her system couldn’t sustain it.

So instead of giving her more to do…

we focused on restoring and stabilising her capacity first.

And from there, everything changed.

Her decisions became cleaner.
Her energy became more consistent.
And the work she was already doing… actually started to land.

Not because we added more.

But because her system could finally hold it. So as you listen to this…

I don’t want you to think about it.

I want you to notice.

Where are you pushing beyond your capacity?

Where are you mistaking collapse for inconsistency?

Where are you trying to scale something your body can’t currently hold?

Because your next level…

is not about doing more.

It’s about building the capacity to hold more of your life…

your work…

and yourself…

without collapse.

And if you’re recognising yourself in this — and you’re ready to actually be supported at this level — you’ll find ways to work with me in the show notes.
