I’ve decided that this month is all about me! Me, me, me, me, me!
Are you pulling a surprised face? Concerned that I’ve turned into a selfish and self-indulgent maniac? Worrying about the consequences this will have on my husband?
Don’t fret Pet! It’s all good!
And the truth is, you probably want (and desperately need) this month to be all about you too!
Seeing as though I’m a Life Coach and I have a background in psychology I do a lot of talking about the ‘self.’
We’ve covered off on self-confidence, self-worth and this month I’m zoning in on self-love…..and I’m kicking off this self-love series with another ‘self’ concept, self care which is a BIG component of self-love.
There are many descriptions of self –care floating around but to me self-care is the simple act of looking after yourself.
By taking good care of yourself, treating yourself kindly and making your needs a priority you’re significantly improving your overall well-being.
Sounds simple, right?
If it’s that simple, why don’t we do it all the time? GREAT QUESTION!
There are a myriad of reasons as to why we don’t practice self-care on a more consistent basis. Here are just a few:
For me, a major reason is that I simply don’t schedule self-care into my week.
I’m so busy being busy, helping others and marveling at myself because I’m a multi-tasking queen, that I don’t even consider self-care as an option.
I always leave it to the last minute to get my hair done (alarm bells go off when it feels like straw), weeks go by before I’ve booked in my pilates sessions and shaving my legs followed by my moisturising them can only be done when I have energy left in the tank after a long day (safe to say, doesn’t happen often!).
My tip for you – schedule in self-care time!
Look at your diary and literally put aside time just for you. Whether it’s 30 minutes to read your magazines on the lounge, book in for a massage, or even get strategic and shave your legs in the morning when you have more energy….plan it and action it!
If you’re anything like me, if you don’t plan it, it will never happen!
Self-care is often associated with selfishness or laziness.
Listen here my friend, taking time out to look after number one (that’s you!) isn’t selfish nor lazy.
I can understand why some people see self-care as indulgent….but you have to remember it’s all subjective.
To you self-care may be getting your nails done every week. This is something you love, enjoy and it makes you feel good. GREAT!
Getting my nails done doesn’t rock my world, but going to pilates or working with a coach is ultimate self-care for me. SEE – Everyone is different!
My tip for you – stop caring about what others think and practice self-care the way you want to and really tap into what makes you feel good.
This is a biggie for me! In addition to making time to practice self-care, I always find some ridiculous reason why I’m not worthy.
I say things like “I haven’t worked hard enough to take time off to have a foot massage.”
“I don’t deserve to get my hair cut and coloured. It’s just too expensive.”
To be honest, I’m kind of embarrassed sharing this with you, but maybe you often feel the same way? It shows I still need to work on my self-worth issues, but I’m getting there!
My tip for you – investing in yourself, whether it involves time, money, love is NOT a waste and it’s oh-so important! You DON’T need permission to practice self-care….you are your own boss! And just think, you ALWAYS feel better once you’ve attended to your own needs.
Next week I’m going to share with you my ‘Ultimate Self-Care Collection’, which will list down a whole heap of awesome self-care ideas that you can adopt and make them your own!
