High-achieving women often reach the edge of what they can handle, but what if burnout isn’t about capability, but about capacity? In this episode, I dive into the hidden cost of success for ambitious women, exploring why so many quietly experience collapse despite appearing “functional” on the outside.

From grief and life transitions to emotional labor and career demands, I explain the total load a woman’s nervous system carries and how to restore capacity so desire, creativity and ambition come back online sustainably. Learn why expansion without nervous system support is risky and how to reclaim your energy, intuition, and magnetism.

I want to talk about something a lot of ambitious women quietly experience… but almost none of us want to admit.

Burnout.

Even if you’ve heard the word a thousand times, I want to shift the conversation. Because burnout isn’t about your capability—it’s about capacity. And it’s rarely about what you’re “doing wrong.” It’s about how much your nervous system is holding across your whole life.

In the latest episode of The Feminine Business School Podcast, I explore:

  • Why high-achieving women quietly hit capacity collapse
  • How life transitions, emotional labor, and unseen pressures accumulate in your nervous system
  • The Push > Collapse > Push cycle that keeps you feeling exhausted, numb, or disconnected
  • How restoring capacity brings creativity, desire, ambition, and magnetism back online

If you’ve been pushing through, feeling stretched, or unsure what you really want anymore… this episode is for you.

Listen now and learn how to expand sustainably, without sacrificing your well-being

TRANSCRIPT: Why So Many High-Achieving Women Are Quietly Burning Out

I want to talk about something today that a lot of ambitious women quietly experience…but almost none of us want to admit.

Burnout.

And even as I say that word, I can almost feel some of you switch off, maybe cringe or roll your eyes….which by the way, I totally understand because I feel the  “ick” around burn out too.

To me, burnout has become such an overused word or concept on and offline It’s talked about everywhere…so it feels like some of us are just over hearing about it.

And if you’re someone who is capable, intelligent, high functioning… there can also be a lot of shame attached to it.

Because burnout can feel like it means you can’t handle your life.

But what I’ve come to understand — through my own experience and through years of working with ambitious women — is that burnout is rarely about capability.

It’s about capacity. So don’t worry, I’m not going to centre burnout today. I’m reshaping the conversation to focus on Why High-Achieving Women Quietly Hit Capacity Collapse….and the real conversation we should be having is about the total load a woman’s nervous system is carrying across her whole life and how we can support this.

To start with I’ll use myself as an example. Not long after my mum passed I was seeing a psychologist and I remember she said something that genuinely shocked me.

She said, “Ainslie, you’re burned out.” And I remember thinking… how could that be possible?

In my mind, I hadn’t even been working. I had stepped back from my business.

But what I hadn’t fully realised at the time was how much my nervous system had been carrying (which btw is kind of ridiculous seeing as though this is the work that I do…but it just goes to the show the power of having professionals hold space for you and point out your blind spots!). But I digress  – truth be told I had been carrying an immense amount  – Moving countries.

My mum’s terminal diagnosis. My dad also had to have brain surgery that year.
Supporting my family emotionally. My own grief.
Major life transitions, including the fun of perimenopause. Identity transitions as I had to assimilate to life back in Australia after a decade living abroad.

It really was an enormous load to hold.

But because it wasn’t traditional “work”, I didn’t recognise it as something that could completely deplete my capacity. And I’m sure many of you can relate.

What that experience taught me is that capacity isn’t just about how much work you’re doing.

It’s about the total load your nervous system is holding.

Your own life load could include grief which could be the loss of a loved one, loss of an identity, a business, a career or job, a loss of an opportunity or the life you desired to live, a place. Or you may be going through a health crisis, IVF, perimenopause or menopause. You may have had to relocate, internationally or even just around the corner – moving is stressful. As someone who has moved 7 times in the last 11 years I know this to be true! And supporting others and the emotional labour women are expected to take on can be hugely taxing as is navigating identity shifts – ageing, business pivots or different seasons in your business or life. There is so much to hold for women which can make the idea of expansion and growth just feel so out of reach for some at particular points in their lives and careers.

And here’s something that I feel is really important to speak to, especially in this climate  – I’ve noticed in the personal development and online business space that so much of the conversation is about expansion.

Bigger goals. Bigger impact. More growth.

But very few people are talking about #allthethings women are already holding.

We live inside what I call an extraction model of success.

A system that constantly asks more from you —
more productivity
more output
more emotional labour
more resilience without ever asking what your actual capacity is.

And when women inevitably reach the edge of that capacity…they assume something is wrong with them.

And this isn’t just me. I see it play out with my clients over and over.

Recently a client of mine came to me after years of building a successful agency. And from the outside everything looked good. But underneath there had been years of accumulated pressure…and not just business pressure.

Like so many, the pandemic had really taken its toll – being separated from family and having to travel during that very stressful time, relocating internationally and having to rebuild her support and social network and business, health challenges, the desire to start a family after getting married

And what started happening was this cycle I see all the time.

She would push really hard when her ambition kicked in…

and then collapse. It’s this Push > Collapse > Push > Collapse cycle or swinging between the two. So it can look like you finally have the motivation and energy and some clarity around what you want to do in your business, you plan things out, execute, feel like you’re being consistent and then your energy and motivation take a massive dip and then you collapse. Or you’re being consistent for a short period of time and then something happens outside of your business, maybe something happens in your family, or you injure yourself, your kid gets sick or your partner is having a hard time…and then you collapse.

From the outside she looked functional.

But internally she was in a functional freeze > collapse cycle.

So from the outside  everything looks successful and productive and you’re being responsible but on the inside you essentially feel numb and disconnected and just detached from your emotions, your relationships and even your bodily sensations. So essentially you’re functioning, feeling kind of dead inside and then something happens and it tips you over the edge, and then you move into a collapsed state. But because you’re ambitious and responsible and high achieving you rally and start the whole cycle again.

And going back to my client, do you know, one of the most heartbreaking things she said to me was:

“I don’t even know what I desire anymore.”

That’s what happens when a nervous system has been overloaded for too long.

It doesn’t just lose energy.

It loses access to aliveness and desire and pleasure.

This is why the work I do with women regardless of what season they are in, doesn’t start with productivity strategies or business planning.

It starts with assessing, restoring and building capacity.

Because when a woman rebuilds her capacity something beautiful happens.

The parts of her she thought she had lost…come back online.

  • creativity
  • desire
  • ambition
  • intuition
  • Magnetism. Not the forced version. The real version.

And if you’re thinking, ok but I don’t really feel maxed out, I’m ready for expansion. It’s important to know that before expansion is possible, the nervous system needs to experience safety.

I want to be really clear about something.
I love expansion.
I work with incredibly ambitious women.

But expansion that comes from regulated capacity, from a fit nervous system, is very different from expansion driven by pressure.

When capacity grows first, expansion becomes sustainable.

The reason I care so deeply about this work is because there’s a whole group of women who fall through the cracks.

They’re ambitious.
They’re intelligent.
They still want meaningful lives and careers.

But they’re in a season where life has stretched them to the edge of their capacity.

And instead of being supported…
we’re being told to push harder and essentially bypass your body. And it’s just not on. It’s not good enough. And of course there is another way.

If you’re listening to this and recognising yourself in these patterns — the push, the collapse, the numbness, not sure what you want anymore, know you’re not alone. Being stretched to the edge of your capacity doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means your nervous system is signalling what it needs.

If you’d like support mapping your capacity and learning how to expand sustainably, I’ve created tools and sessions that walk you through this work. You’ll find the links in the show notes.
